Beximco workers continue protest on highway over unpaid salaries

Workers of Beximco Industrial Park in Sarabo area of Kashimpur, Gazipur, have been staging a protest on Dhaka-Tangail highway for the fourth consecutive day, demanding payment of the outstanding salaries for October.
The protest began around 9:00am at Chakraborty intersection, causing traffic disruption on the highway, said Savar Highway Police Officer-in-Charge Saugat ul Alam.
Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam of Gazipur Industrial Police told The Daily Star that while the road remained blocked, traffic was being diverted through alternative routes to ensure normal flow.
“We will not return home without our wages,” said a protesting worker, adding that the authorities had yet to contact them despite the four-day demonstration.
Journalists attempting to cover the protest faced resistance, with workers reportedly harassing media personnel trying to take photographs or videos.
A local journalist, who requested anonymity, told The Daily Star, “I was detained by the workers for 20 minutes when I tried to speak with them. They later released me and asked me to leave.”
Police and administrative officials are present at the site, trying to pacify the workers.
According to factory and industrial police sources, the Beximco Industrial Park employs around 22,000 workers.
Efforts to reach the Beximco Industrial Park authorities for a statement on the matter were unsuccessful.
